5 ways to use your leftover Easter hot cross buns

Hot cross buns

We all overindulge at Easter and that’s just part of the fun! With all the food and especially chocolate consumed over Easter, there is bound to be some leftovers, so make sure they don’t go to waste. We have come up with six ways you can reuse your hot cross buns so that you don’t have to throw them away in an aim to waste less and save more. Many of our recipes include leftover chocolate as well, so you could use your leftover Easter eggs and bunnies too!

Did you know that Australians throw out 4 million tons of food every year? That’d be $8 billion worth of food every single year. So, when you’re shopping for holidays like Easter and Christmas, try not to over shop. If you do end up with a lot of extra food, then look at how you can use it in other ways, rather than letting it go to waste.

Our five ways to use your leftover hot cross buns will have you wishing you’d used them this way BEFORE Easter! (well, there’s always next year, right?)

Break up your hot cross buns and place them in an oven proof bowl or casserole dish.

Break up your leftover Easter eggs and sprinkle them over the top of the hot cross buns.

Beat together the eggs, sugar, milk, vanilla and flour and pour over the mixture.

Cook for about 30 minutes or until the custard is thick and the top is golden brown.

Hot Cross Bun Apple Crumble

This hot cross bun apple crumble is so good that I wish I could make it all year round. (Woolworths, please look at having hot cross buns available all the time!) The HCB crumbs add the best flavour to the crumble.

Ingredients

2-4 green apples peeled and sliced (depending on the size of your dish and how much apple you like)

1 cup of Woolworths Fruit Hot Cross Buns (2x HCBs in the food processor will work)

1 cup plain flour

1 cup brown sugar

3/4 cup butter

Method

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

Peel and slice your apples and place them in the bottom of the dish with a few tablespoons of water.

Combine your HCB crumbs, flour, sugar and butter and crumb with your fingers or in a food processor using the pulse option.

Sprinkle over the top of the apples.

Cook for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
