Winter - ‘tis the season to be sick! It’s the time when the little darlings head off to school or kindy and bring back a delightful cocktail of cold and flu germs to spread about the house. This means dad comes down with ‘man flu’ while mum has to keep going- even though all we want to do is climb into bed!
So, to keep you going (and just in case you get to sneak off to bed) here are our top five things to keep you going through the flu season…
1 Orange Juice and Chicken Soup
These are a must-have! The combination of the two is a perfect remedy to help support your immune system and soothe the throat. Get yourself some fresh oranges to juice because it’s way better than anything you can buy premade. Then for chicken soup just do the following:
Fill a stockpot with water and throw in a chicken carcass, two carrots (chopped), a chopped onion and two cloves of garlic. Boil with the lid on for 2-3 hours then strain the liquid into a second saucepan. Pick out the chicken meat from the strainer and add back into the liquid. Add in a handful of rice, some spaghetti broken into little pieces, some chopped potato, carrot and any other veggies you like and then cook for another 30 minutes or so and there you have it - the perfect soup!
2 Vicks Action Cold & Flu tablets
If you don’t have the luxury of heading to bed this winter, then you NEED these! I’ve recently been taking them for my ongoing cold (off and on for a few weeks now - I kid you not) and they have made a world of difference! They have the power to help give mums the relief from cold and flu symptoms and help ease a blocked nose, headache, runny nose, body aches, sore throat pain and reduce fever. New Vicks Action Cold and Flu has scientifically proven ingredients like Paracetamol, Phenylephrine and Chlorpheniramine, which work together to provide relief from those six most annoying cold and flu symptoms. They’re also free of Codeine (which is good as that stuff makes me drowsy!)
3 Binge Watch your favourite TV Shows
If you are going to be sick you might as well make the most of it. Get into bed or wrap yourself up on the couch and get binging. My recommendations are: Nashville, The 100, Orphan Black, Orange is the New Black, Outlander and Suits if you are looking for something new. If you want to re-watch something older I’m a sucker for Gossip Girl and Friday Night Lights (Tim Riggins anyone?!!)
4 A Good Book
Now’s the time to get reading. There are so many great books out there at the moment. I’m a total binge reader; I like to read the whole book in a day if I can. My latest favourites are: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, Try Not To Breathe by Holly Sneddon, The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan and The Light Between Oceans by M.L Steadman. There’s a range of romantic, thriller and serious novels here so there’s something for everyone!
5 Hugs!
I don’t know about you but kid hugs are the best therapy you can get when you are feeling unwell! Those warm little arms wrapped around your neck and those legs around your waist in those big koala hugs. Nothing compares. Lucky I had my Vicks Action Cold & Flu tablets to relieve those annoying cold and flu symptoms and help get me back into hugging shape!
