We love the film Billy Elliot so we were super excited to go to the opening night of Billy Elliot the Musical at the Lyric Theatre.
If you don't know the story - Based on the film of the same name, Billy Elliot the Musical is a funny, gritty, heart-warming and feel- good celebration following the journey of a young boy raised in a small British mining town. Set against the backdrop of the 1984/’85 miners’ strike, Billy’s journey takes him out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family, the whole community and changes his life forever.
If you have a child that is a bit 'different' from his peers this is the show for them. Billy's love of dance and his determination is the perfect message for any kid. Be warned though that there is some swearing in the show so its probably best for 10 and up.
The boys in this show were just the highlight. The acting and dancing talent was incredible and they were only 12 years old. The role of Billy is shared between four boys, and on opening night the role was played by Jamie Rogers (first on the left).
And, while Billy was fantastic, I absolutely fell in love with Michael, Billy's best friend who is discovering his sexuality in a mining town in the 80's. Michael is so unashamedly himself that it makes us all stop and think.
This was just fun, fun, fun the entire time. It runs for three hours but the time flies by. I didn't want it to end!
Featuring music by the legendary Elton John, book and lyrics by Lee Hall, choreography by Peter Darling and direction by Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot the Musical has been seen by over 12 million people worldwide. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, it is the recipient of 85 awards internationally, including 10 Tony Awards, 5 Olivier Awards and 8 Helpmann Awards.
