As mums we often put ourselves last. With everything that we have to deal with in the day, and then the bath/dinner/bed routine, it's often late at night before we get any time for ourselves. It's easy to forget about any of our goals and our own personal learning when where are so wrapped up in teaching our kids. But us mums need to take the time to remember what they are passionate about, and that we are strong, capable women in our own right. When mums work and extend their learning, we make great role models for our children. Which is why Lynsey and I have just signed up for a one year Diploma of Business, through Business Mamas.
I'm a life long learner- I find nothing more satisfying than learning new things, but I prefer to learn practical skills rather than theory. Before I started Stuff Mums Like I had never done anything online. I certainly had no idea about WordPress or the back end of a website- and I'd never even heard of a widget or a plugin before! But learning these new skills, as well as learning about blogging and social media, has not only taught me how to use a web platform, it's increased my skills and my confidence in my day job in PR. I have so many new skills to offer clients now.
I'm doing this Diploma of Business to keep building my skills, and my confidence. There's a lot I still don't know about running a business (lets not even talk about the state of my financial records- I pity the tax guy) and I want to be able to do it all! Having Stuff Mums Like has given me the opportunity to create a business that I can run from home and I want to capitalise and expand on that. It's grown so fast that Lynsey and I often feel that we are just running to keep up. Having the opportunity to learn more business skills means that it will give us a strong framework so that we can grow our business to be the best it can be.
We both want to be able to stay at home with our children for as long as we can, but we also need the mental stimulation (not to mention the money!) that comes with working. It's been many years since I've studied but I figure that it can't be any harder than the time I did my uni degree with two babies can't it?!!
Business Mamas is a new way to do your Diploma of Business- it's designed so not only are you working on your Diploma of Business, but you are developing a specific business idea at the same time. We each have a 'Business Angel' who works with us on our business idea (and we have some good ones!) and all our coursework is tailored to our business ideas, so that we are learning with a purpose and a goal.
Our Business Angel helps us set deadlines and keeps us on track so that we don't let everyone else take priority and put ourselves last again.
We've only just started our Business Mamas journey and we are so excited to see where it goes. We've got so many ideas that we can't wait to share with you.
