Brought to you by Nuffnang and Dream Lover
On Monday night I was lucky enough to be invited to head over to the Lyric Theatre at The Star to attend the media launch of the brand new musical extravaganza; Dream Lover - the Bobby Darin Musical.
We arrived at the theatre and were accompanied through the rabbit warren of backstage corridors until we came out onto the stage- where a full 18-piece swing band was set up! We had the opportunity to hear from director Simon Phillips (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) as he announced that David Campbell will be taking on the role of Bobby Darin (swoon- who doesn’t love David Campbell?!!)
Dream Lover- the Bobby Darin Musical is a brand new, never before performed musical written by Frank Howson and John Michael Howson, who are responsible for the smash hits Dusty and SHOUT! The Musical.
We know it’s going to look spectacular because the costume design is being done by Tim Chappell, who created the amazing costumes for both the film and stage version of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert- and has there been anything more spectacular that the scene where Guy Pierce rode through the desert on a bus in full regalia- on a giant shoe? I think not!
It tells the story of Bobby Darin, famous for his hits including Beneath the Sea, Dream Lover and Mack the Knife. It covers his beginnings and rise to fame, before his untimely death at 37. It also looks into his personal life- most people have no idea that he was married to screen siren Sandra Dee!
We were treated to David performing some of Darin’s hit songs with the full swing band backing him- it was amazing! After the event we all got to catch up with David and his co-star Hannah Fredricksen (Sandra Dee) to chat about the musical.
Dream Lover- the Bobby Darin Musical will be at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in September. To book your tickets visit www.dreamlover.com.au
To celebrate we are giving one lucky reader 1x Double Pass to a preview showing of Dream Lover in September 2016 (Syd only). To win tell us who you would take and why.
